Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

As a research oversight committeel, the Rensselaer Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible for helping ensure an environment in which scientific research at Rensselaer can advance in a safe, informed, and ethical manner.The IBC reviews and monitors all research involving the following materials, regardless of the source of funding: recombinant DNA or recombinant RNA molecules, plasmids and transposons, viruses and viral vectors, human and non-human primate cells, tissues and fluids, prions, bacteria, yeast, fungi, toxins, all pathogens, and select agents. Proposed research protocols in involving these items must be submitted for approval as described in the guidelines. The Department of Environmental, Health, Safety and Risk Management in the Division of Human Resources also maintains important policies and procedures related to Biological Safety.
